This bronze medal was instituted in 1834 and was awarded to commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers and enlisted men who served under General Mouraviev in 1833 when, upon the order of the Emperor, he supported the Turkish Sultan against the rebel Mahomet Ali. Mahomet Ali unsccessfully attempted to establish an autonomous regimein the then Turkish Province of Egypt. Russia's support of the Sultan was through no love of the Turkish Empire, but an effort to prevent the revolt of subjugated noations to sovereign power.
Obverse has the monogram of Emperor Nicholas I topped by an Imperial Crown. Reverse has the date 1833 surrounded by a laurel wreath.
